Church of the light
Tadao Ando
1989:
The church is built from reinforced concrete, which is exposed on the interior and exterior of the church. I find this interesting as concrete isn't commonly exposed in spiritual places like a church. Therefore the materials of the building is important because it turns a low status material into a high status material.
Sao Paulo Museum of
Contemporary Art
LINA BO BARDI
1957-68:
Sao Paulo Museum of Contemporary Art's facade is primarily made from glass. The exposed aged concrete slabs creates an interesting texture, which contrasts off the bold red supports. I like the fact that the building is raised above the ground, providing walk-able space underneath the building. The building looks as if its defying gravity. It would be interesting to see its destruction.
Brazilian Museum of Sculpture
Paulo Mendes da Rocha
1988-94:
The Brazilian Museum of Sculpture appears as a mass of concrete which extends off one pier to another. I like the horizontal direction of the building, and its use of raw materials. The concrete body of the building separates the sky from the ground. It frames itself within the landscape.
